The credit of consolidating the Aryan concept in the second half of the 19th century goes more to F. Max Muller than to anybody else. Apart from translating the Rigveda into English and the onerous task of editing the volumes of the Sacred Books of the East Series, Max Muller wrote largely on two themes: Hindu inwardness and spiritualism, and what he called ‘the science of language’ throwing light on the common ancestry of the Hindu, Teuton and the Greek (Chakrabarti 98).
