The cracks in the edifice had begun to occur soon after Nehru’s death but in more recent times they have become unbridgeable chasms. The dream of a unified national community occupying a given territory remains unfulfilled. As the country faces disintegrative pulls from various quarters, the two dominant strains of Indian nationalism, secular and Hindu, are once again in the forefront of the contest to define and determine the contours of India’s identity. The role of the state in this enterprise still remains central for the protagonists of both types of nationalism (Sridharan 304).
